Something happens
at around age 50. We don't like to admit it, but there it is. We tire easier,
gain weight quicker and even if this doesn't happen, our bodies sort of rearrange
themselves so our clothing doesn't exactly fit the same way it used to. Our shoe
size may even change. There is a shift around that age, though not everyone experiences
it the same way or at the same time or even notice it for a while. Gradually,
with each visit to the doctor, we become the owners of more and more Latin names
and acronyms. More pills show up on our nightstand.
It's
a metabolic shift of slowing down. Starting at around that age it becomes easier
for people to develop nutritional deficiencies. For instance, digestive fluid
production in the stomach slows down as we age. Consequently, protein digestion
suffers and we don't get the full benefit of what we eat. Heartburn sets in. Without
enough good quality protein, cell repair is less than optimal and so on. Also,
with aging there is a tendency for functional problems. Arthritis, high blood
pressure, osteoporosis, heart problems, prostate and urinary troubles etc. The organs are still good, they just aren't working like they used
to.
At this age it becomes critical to pay attention
to our digestion, to make sure we put in the top quality ingredients our bodies
require for repair. Since we have abused our bodies all our adult lives, it is
now time to make our apologies. We may need digestive aids or benefit from a daily
tonic. Our diet may need to be adjusted. Attention to our bodies at this time
of shifting sands will pay dividends in terms of a smoother, less troubled old
age.
