A "salt" is any type of readily dissolvable mineral combination. William H. Schuessler, a German biochemist, found that there are certain essential minerals, now called trace elements, that the body requires in all of its tissues, be it brain, nerve, blood, bone or skin. Lack of any of these minerals may lead to disease. Providing the missing minerals to the tissues corrects that imbalance, and so eliminates the illness.
Schuessler recognized and categorized twelve cell salts by 1873. Cell salts are triturated (ground with lactose) in a homeopathic potency, which uses minute quantities of a substance. The potentiation (grinding and dilution) process reduces the minerals to an easily absorbable molecular structure. This multiplies the essential energy of a substance while at the same time decreasing the substance amount.
Although prepared according to homeopathic principles, this is a nutritional and therapeutically based system. Part of the precept is that you cannot feed a cell, the cell feeds itself, if only the food is there for it to do so. An easy one to try is if you’re prone to muscle spasms, eyelid twitching, restless legs and the like, you can take Mag. phos. (magnesia phosphorica) and experience nearly immediate relief. Be sure to observe the special directions on the bottle.
Schussler believed that this system was a cure-all by itself. I don’t believe that there is any such thing as a cure-all. I do believe that when indicated, an appropriately chosen tissue salt in combination with whatever else the person needs can speed up the process of healing.
